Today I want to talk about one of our main focuses in Florida, which is tile roofing. To put it simply the tile roofing space is not huge but it is important for many regions across FL and the world. Tile roofing makes up for most of the roofs in places like Italy and France.
Here in Naples, Florida tile roofs are the primary roofs for most of Naples homeowners.
The way to understand a tile roof in simple terms is that the actual tile that is on the roof isn’t the water barrier. I’m sure you may have heard that before, but it really isn’t.
Whats underneath/along side the tile roofs all around the world is what actually makes it water tight:
- Felt
- Rubberized Under-layment
- Flashing
- Stucco
- Sheathing
- Nails
- Screws
- Mortar
- Battens
- Tar
- Caulk
- Vents
- Attic fans
There are a lot of different items underneath the tile, and there are important items above them as well, such as:
- Mortar
- Solar hot water heater panels
- Clear coat sealers
- Satellite internet or radio devices
When we remove a roof, our goal is remove all items from the previous roof installation. In the state of Florida it is part of the state regulated building code to re-nail the sheathing. We as roofers can not pass the inspection if we do not re-nail the sheathing. This is a crucial part of your roof installation as this will act as an additional safeguard to your roofing system.
Whats underneath your roof is your attic, and your attic needs a to be looked at to see what type of hurricane wind safeguards are in place. The most common hurricane safeguards are hurricane straps, there are multiple different types of hurricane straps spanning from metal connectors that do wrap over trusses and those that don’t, those that do are secured with three nails.
